Despite earlier reports, this movie is not a biography of Joy Mangano. Annie Mumolo's original script was based on Mangano, an Italian-American inventor and entrepreneur known for inventions such as the self-wringing Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers. She is the president of Ingenious Designs, appears regularly on US television shopping channel HSN, and holds more than 100 patents. When David O. Russell came onto the project, he added many more supporting characters and interwove Mangano's original biography with stories of other women changing their lives. Russell admitted he was in no hurry to meet Mangano in real life during filming because he wanted to make the movie his own way. He only spoke to Mangano on the phone. Joy's last name is never mentioned in the film, and she is not a native of Smithtown, NY, on Long Island's north shore.
Jennifer Lawrence wore wigs and hairpieces for the majority of filming. While doing Joy's haircut scene, she accidentally snipped some of her own hair as well as the fake hairpieces. The whole haircut was done in one take.

This is the third David O Russell film where Jennifer Lawrence has played a character significantly older than she is in real life. In Silver Lining's Playbook, her character Tiffany was married for several years (and was in her forties in the original book) - placing her in her mid-to late twenties (Jennifer being twenty-one at the time of filming). In American Hustle, Rosalyn's real life counterpart was in her forties, and had been a mother for several years. Joy Mangano didn't start selling her inventions until she was thirty, while Jennifer was five years younger during filming.
Jennifer Lawrence and Elisabeth Rohm had previously starred together in American Hustle, playing two women who hit it off and become friends. At one point Elisabeth's character Dolly has to calm down Jennifer's Rosalyn when she acts out and nearly ruins everything. Here their roles are inverted - playing sisters who hate each other, with Elisabeth Rohm playing the brat and Jennifer Lawrence the level-headed one.
Isabella Rossellini and Diane Ladd co-star in this film and also co-starred in Wild at Heart.
